The Culinary Arts - A New Renaissance In The Making
The culinary arts are enjoying resurgence. Until recently it was more popular to watch a good meal on the TV than to actually serve one to your friends. TV Chefs are very trendy but that was as near to good cuisine as most of us got. But recently there has been a real interest in good food and more especially in good cookery. These days we do not only want to be able to see a talented chef preparing wonderful food on the TV, or to go to a good restaurant when we want a good meal. These days we want to be able to cook it ourselves.
In fact in some (usually middle class) circles it is even getting quite competitive. These days not always your company that you are invited for, but to sample the latest creation by friends that are eager to show off their new skills and their latest culinary triumph. You are more likely to be shown to a dining room that is laid as well as your average Michelin restaurant and fed with six courses of French or Italian cuisine (or occasionally a mixture), than to be shown the way to the barbecue by a friend in a Hawaiian shirt.
But it is a marked improvement to the height of the evening being the Pizza delivery arriving. Now there’s nothing wrong with pizza, but for the average household to be more aware and interested in what they are cooking is no bad thing. With the obesity levels as high as they are, then a diet that is more aware of the culinary arts is likely to use a lot more fresh foods and salad. If you go to most other countries in the world there is a much greater knowledge of good traditional food and it is wonderful that there is now such an interest in good cooking.
Although there are many good schools where you can go to broaden your knowledge of the culinary arts, good food does not have to be complicated. In many of the finest cuisines it is not necessary to prepare elaborate meals in order to eat well. It is often the quality of the ingredients that is the most important thing. After all if you buy good quality ingredients and do not do too much to them, they will still be good when they reach the plate. Good food is becoming more and more popular and if the trend continues then we will not only be a nation that eats well but we will be far healthier as well.
